The Temple of Time

The Temple of Time

The Temple of Time, constructed in Coral Springs as part of the healing process for the students, first responders and families of victims of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas has been completed. Artist David Best asked to work with the special needs community and everyone at ScentsAbility was honored to work on this special project.

Now completed, members of the community are visiting daily “leaving their pain” at the temple. Artist David Best explained to our group…”In order for people to feel safe, to feel and express deep emotion so they can heal, the temples must be beautiful and delicate, while at the same time being strong to provide comforting support”.

The ScentsAbility group worked at the site twice to assist with temple construction and will be special guests at the ceremonial burn of the temple.

Incredible meeting with one of the largest Developers

Incredible meeting with one of the largest Developers

This past month we had incredible meetings with one of the largest Developers in the City of Boynton Beach; along with one of the Assistant City Managers – both working on the downtown redevelopment. They expressed great interest in working with us to create an affordable, supportive community for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The next step is to create a conceptual plan and supply the city with information on the quantity and types of housing we are looking for. We are also in the process of developing a housing interest survey that will be distributed to families in the next few weeks.

This project will be several years in the making and we need the financial support of our community! More information will be included in the next few newsletters about our housing task force and ways you can help!

We continue to provide independent living experiences for everyone at ScentsAbility including lessons in cooking and shopping – skills that will be necessary as we move closer to our goals.

Stayin’ Fit and Lovin’ it

Stayin’ Fit and Lovin’ it

Every Tuesday several of our young adults have been participating in a one-hour personal training session taught by Teresa Higgins held at Ultimate Sports Institute (USI) in Weston. Both USI and Theresa have donated their time and space and we are incredibly grateful. Fitness training is not easy for young adults with IDD. Regular classes at big gyms are hard to follow, too fast, and intimidating. Theresa is so encouraging and teaches the importance of exercise and healthy nutrition. We are so grateful to Theresa and USI and excited to continue on our path to healthy eating and fitness!

Building the Temple

As mentioned in our last newsletter, internationally renowned sculptor David Best, the Temple of Time, a place where all those touched by the tragic Parkland shooting can bring their pain, their tears, their rage and their sorrow. We were so grateful to be given the opportunity to volunteer with the crew. Everyone worked so hard and the crew was so patient and kind to all of the young adults at ScentsAbility. Tasks included carrying wood, stacking and helping decorate the wood panels to be used as flooring.

David Best was there and made everyone comfortable and confident that their work was appreciated. The work was exhausting…but very fulfilling. We left satisfied that we participated in such an important community project and we look forward to doing it again next week.

For three months, the temple — a secular work of art — will be open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk …then, in mid-May, it will be destroyed in a ceremonial fire. The burning ceremony is meant to be a cathartic experience, helping people in pain release their grief and move beyond their suffering, while never forgetting those lost that day.

Affordable Housing Update

Affordable Housing Update

We are continuing in our efforts to develop and build an affordable, supportive Housing Community every day. Project Manager, Denise Anderson, attended a meeting in Orlando with the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council in partnership with the Florida Housing Coalition where she met with the Stakeholder Work Group to assist in the development of a Community Involvement Plan. The plan will provide strategies for the Disability Community to increase participation in local planning processes surrounding affordable, accessible, inclusive housing.

ScentsAbility Board Members met with Boynton Beach City Managers and the Community Redevelopment Agency, joined by Jack Kosik, housing guru and co-founder of Noah’s Arc. At that meeting everyone agreed that Boynton Beach is the perfect city to build our affordable, inclusive community. Stay tuned for more details in the next few months.

In preparation for the future, some of our young adults are practicing by spending weekends away from home. Our goal is to start the transition slowly by planning supervised overnights and paving the way for their path to independence!

ScentsAbility offers On the Job Training

ScentsAbility offers On the Job Training

It is so important for community organizations to work together to provide quality services for our young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). ScentsAbility welcomed Gulfstream Goodwill
https://www.gulfstreamgoodwill.org/ Job Training Program for a day at the candle shop. We had two groups of young adults from Palm Beach and everyone had an incredible, fun learning experience and learned what it takes to work in a candle factory. We made candles, custom air freshener sachet ScentRocks and everyone went home with a “scent”sational swag bag! The young adults all got along so well, enjoyed a lunch at Pizza Time and made new friends. We are very excited that one of the young adults has agreed to participate join ScentsAbility’s On The Job Training (OJT) program doing some graphic design work. Gulfstream Goodwill’s program helps young adults with IDD discover and build their career goals. The trainees receive pay while they are in training and work with their job
coach to find a position in their field of interest.

Vocational Rehabilitation funds OJT services both directly and through approved agencies such as Gulfstream Goodwill. If your agency is looking for a quality OJT site please contact bonnie@scentsability.org.

A Great Accomplishment

At ScentsAbility we have an amazing team of young adults that work extremely hard. We modify many of our tasks to give everyone the best chance at success. The dedication and determination of each and every employee is inspiring. As part of our preparation for a Magic Candle event on Tuesday, Feb 5th at Bright Horizons School, we pre-wick all the jars and pre-label the lids…no easy task considering we will have over 150 students making candles!
Khari Moench, who has limited mobility and vision, placed over 150 Valentine’s Day labels on lids and accomplished a task that most thought he could not do. We are so incredibly proud of Khari as he shows the world every day that there are no limits! Great job Khari!

Upcoming Events:

A very special event on Friday, February 8th in Boynton Beach…Magic Wheels & Special Deals https://www.boynton-beach.org/magic from 6 PM – 7:30 PM at Barrier Free Park. Team ScentsAbility will be there with Magic Candles!
We have been asked to participate in a vendor event at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital on Thursday, February 14th. If you are in the area stop by!

ScentsAbility is helping David Best build a Temple!

Last week we had the BEST visitor come to ScentsAbility…literally. David Best, internationally acclaimed American sculptor spent an hour at ScentsAbility spreading his inspirational messages. He is well-known for building huge unaffiliated temples out of recycled wood for the Burning Man festivals, this year being held in Nevada on August 25th. As David has expressed “In order for people to feel safe, to feel and express deep emotion and so they can heal, the temples must be beautiful and delicate while at the same time being strong to provide comforting support”.  David encourages people to write messages within the temple, things they wish to have closure around. Temples are lit a blaze, burning to the ground, along with everyone’s emotional baggage held within.

As part of the healing process from the anniversary date of the tragic shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, David Best will be building a temple in Coral Springs. When he was at ScentsAbility he told our young adults that his greatest inspiration comes from people. He was genuinely moved by the spirit and heart of our young adults and has asked us to participate in the building of this incredible temple. We are honored to be part of this healing project.

Affordable Housing Mission

Affordable Housing Mission

As part of our mission to provide job training, employment and housing for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities we follow a WORK, LIVE PLAY model. ScentsAbility provides the work component and we are now focusing on our housing mission; to build an affordable supportive housing community. We are working with the officials in the City of Boynton Beach and creating several task forces for this extensive project.

Our Development Director, Denise Anderson, was recently chosen to be a member of an exclusive work group for The Florida Housing Coalition, in partnership with the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. She is a member of the work group for the community involvement initiative project. “This initiative is intended to influence the use of local housing funds to increase access to affordable housing and support inclusive living for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities”. Denise is the perfect choice to head our Housing Mission. In the next few months we will be planning and seeking support from the private and Corporate sectors.  If you are interested in sponsorship, fundraising, or housing please contact Denise Anderson at denise@scentsability.org.

Exciting News!

Exciting News!

As Evergreen Members of the National Candle Association (NCA), ScentsAbility attends the annual NCA Convention and has the opportunity to meet and mingle with executives from our industry. There are so many special members that have helped us tweak our formulas, choosing just the right raw materials, working with us to perfect our products.

Michael Mack, who up until recently was the National Sales Manager for Orchidia Fragrance has now joined the ScentsAbility Team as Director of Operations! Michael’s experience in production, manufacturing, along with his background in chemistry is the perfect combination to round out our executive team. We will now be able to expand our product offerings to include not only our ScentsAbility line of products; but to offer private label and contract manufacturing, giving our young adults additional work. We are so grateful to have Mike on our team!

AOL Holiday Heroes

Every holiday has its unsung hero, and AOL’s video series “Holiday Heroes” highlights those individuals who are making a difference in their communities.

A producer from AOL saw the story of ScentsAbility on South Florida’s Channel 10 News earlier this fall and ScentsAbilitiy was chosen as AOL’s Holiday Heroes. AOL sent a crew to the ScentsAbility candle shoppe to interview the team, and spend a day of candle making with the special young adults. It was a very special day for everyone. The morning was full of interviews and emotional individual stories. Then they went out for pizza with the crew for lunch. In the afternoon they returned to the candle shop and made candles, volcanoes and had lots of laughs. The AOL crew learned all about ScentsAbility’s mission to provide job training, employment and housing for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
